Why Skills4Aid?
West and Central Africa is the scene of multiple complex and protracted humanitarian crises. The region is also hard hit by the consequences of climate change. Prolonged drought or floods make agriculture and livestock farming impossible for many communities. The East and Southern Africa region has the largest number of people – 74.1 million – who will need humanitarian assistance. The crisis in Sudan accounts for nearly 40,000,000 of this total. In 2024, after three years of record drought, experts are concerned about the consequences of the return of the El Niño climate phenomenon on the Horn of Africa where significant flooding is already observed. Developing income-generating activities and adaptation mechanisms can reduce the consequences of crises and climate change.
Sub-Saharan Africa is the region most affected by internal displacement in 2023. This situation puts enormous pressure on communities and countries that must host sudden and unplanned population movements. These host communities must be supported to ensure the integration of displaced people is possible. An increasing number of migrants are returning to their countries of origin and internally displaced people are returning home. For these solutions to be sustainable, it is important to create conditions for economic empowerment.
More than 601,000 of the world's poor live in sub-Saharan Africa.
Poverty, inequality, unemployment, governance deficits, environmental degradation, climate change, instability and insecurity are drivers of forced migration and displacement. In addition to supporting conflict resolution and peacebuilding. There is a need to implement poverty reduction projects and climate resilience environmental projects.
- Income Generating Activities We Support
What sectors is Skills4Aid involved in?
Skills4Aid supports local and cooperative organizations in their support to local communities and displaced people for the implementation of Income Generating Activities which fall into 5 different areas.
- Local organizations
Our partners
Including women, youth and people with disabilities in cooperatives and Civil Society Organizations ensures the inclusive development of a resilient economy.
- Civil society organizations
- Cooperatives
Civil society organizations
Local Organizations are present as close as possible to the populations, before, during and after the crisis. Having linguistic and socio-cultural proximity and a better understanding of the needs of the populations, Local Organizations play a crucial role in the effectiveness of aid and the search for sustainable solutions. Once their skills are strengthened, they can prevent or respond effectively to crises.
They can act locally, in areas inaccessible to internationals, for peace and sustainable development..
Cooperatives
It is widely accepted that cooperatives are an essential means of combating poverty and, as such, contribute to development in Africa. They represent a significant share of the private sector in most countries, particularly in agriculture, a key sector and the leading creator of jobs on the continent. Cooperatives, based on the values of democracy, fair distribution of wealth created, both private and collective ownership, and solidarity, enable a just and sustainable transition in Africa.
